Trim Levels (Exterior)

The 2017 Encore comes in five trim levels: the Preferred, Sport Touring, Preferred II, Essence, and Premium. The base Preferred now offers LED taillights, and returning highlight features include 18-inch wheels, heated mirrors, rear privacy glass, LED running lights, a six-way power driver seat with lumbar support, roof rails, a cargo cover, keyless entry and ignition, OnStar services, and a host of tech and entertainment features for the eight-inch touchscreen. The Sport Touring adds fog lights, remote ignition, a rear spoiler, and several options.

The Preferred II goes further, with dual-zone automatic climate control, collision prevention systems, a 120-volt power outlet, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Essence gets fancier with leather seating, memorized driver settings, LED headlights, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, and a six-way power passenger seat. And finally, the Premium tops off the Essence's features with several more collision-prevention systems and a seven-speaker Bose premium audio setup.

Engine (Power)

The 2017 Encore uses a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with up to 138 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Though this is the only actual engine, drivers can opt for an enhanced version with 153 horsepower instead. This tuned-up version is available on all trim levels above the Preferred.

Performance

The Encore is one of the smaller compact SUVs on the market. Paired with an agile turn radius and tight steering, this makes the Encore right at home in urban parking lots or other tight squeezes. The four-cylinder engine uses a six-speed automatic transmission, and the Encore can be configured for front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Fuel economy is very strong in the standard engine settings, getting up to 25 city and 33 highway miles per gallon. This only drops to 23 city and 30 highway mpg with the enhanced version.

Interior

The Preferred cabin uses a combination of cloth and imitation leather upholstery, and has 18.8 cubic feet of cargo space. The rear seats fold 60/40, and the front passenger seat can also fold flat to load extra long items. The base infotainment and audio setup includes an eight-inch touchscreen and six speakers. Drivers have 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot potential and Bluetooth connectivity off the bat, as well as a CD player, two USB ports, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack, and even more on the higher trim levels.

Safety Features

A rearview camera is standard, along with four OnStar emergency services: automatic crash notifications, remote door locking and unlocking, stolen vehicle tracking, and on-demand roadside assistance. Trims above the Preferred either include or offer collision prevention technology such as blind spot warnings and rear cross-traffic alerts. The Premium is the most comprehensive trim for safety, adding forward collision warnings, lane departure warnings, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic windshield wipers. Many of these features are still options on lower trim levels.
