The 2017 Ford Flex comes in three simple trim levels. The SE starts things off with basic climate control, a reverse sensing system, and a basic stereo. The SEL comes next and it improves on the SE with dual-zone automatic temperature control, heated front seats, a stereo upgrade to SYNC 3, and the option to switch to all-wheel drive. The third trim is the Limited, which adds standard features like a 110-volt AC outlet, a Sony audio system with 12 speakers and a built-in navigation system, perforated leather seats, and a power lift gate.

Engine (Power)

The standard engine for the 2017 Flex is a 3.5-liter V6, which offers 287 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. However, Ford also makes a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, one that gets 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque out of the same displacement. It's an available upgrade exclusively for the Limited trim, and when you get one you also get paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, a way to change gears with the automatic transmission without taking your hands off the wheel.

Performance

The 2017 Ford Flex isn't an off-road kind of SUV, but that doesn't mean it's as bad as the average family sedan. The available intelligent all-wheel drive constantly monitors the wheels for signs of poor traction and then springs to life, redirecting the engine torque to the wheels that can make the best use of it. The Flex also comes with AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, which uses gyros to detect whether the vehicle is swaying badly and can use the brakes to make things stable again.

Interior

The interior of the 2017 Flex is very modern and open, thanks in no smart part to the boxy design that makes it a great vehicle for carrying cargo. Behind the third row is a nice, round 20 cubic feet, and once you fold the two rows down you get 83.2 cubic feet for cargo. As for the passengers, they can appreciate the available Multipanel Vista Roof, which adds sunroofs and moonroofs to every row. You can also enjoy features like ten-way adjustable front seats, a trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio, and a dual-headrest DVD entertainment system for those long family vacations.

Safety Features

With the 2017 Ford Flex, all three models come standard with a rearview camera complete with a basic grid that lets you know where to aim. The Flex also has several available driver assistance systems you can install, such as the Blind Spot Information System and the Adaptive Cruise Control that comes along with a Forward Collision Warning with Brake Support.
