Just like in 2016, the latest GMC Terrain has five trim levels: the SL, SLE-1, SLE-2, SLT, and Denali. Most trim levels have optional all-wheel drive, except for the base SL which is front-wheel drive only. The SLE-1 and SLE-2 have more equipment and package options than the SL, giving buyers the ability to choose what they like. Remote starting and other convenient technologies are included on the SLT and Denali.

As for exterior differences, the SLE-1 adds optional practical features to the SL build, like wheel locks and splash guards. The SLE-2 has an optional chrome package, while chrome exterior highlights are added standard to the SLT. The Denali is ritzy and advanced, including a power liftgate, chrome luggage racks, daytime-running LED headlights, and an optional power sunroof.

Engine (Power)
As with 2016, there are two engines available for the 2017 GMC Terrain. The standard engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 182 horsepower, 172 pound-feet of torque, and 22/32 city/highway miles per gallon. All trim levels can be equipped with the more powerful 3.6-liter V6, which has 301 horsepower, 272 pound-feet of torque, and 17/24 city/highway mpg. Unlike many competing SUVs, the Terrain's engines can be designed for an E-85 ethanol blend instead of regular gasoline.
Performance
All versions of the 2017 GMC terrain use a reliable six-speed automatic transmission with a fuel-saving ECO mode on the four-cylinder engine. This mode adjusts the shifting points to improve fuel economy at lower speeds or stop-and-go traffic. Automatic engine guide braking redirects the powertrain's output and slows the model down when descending a hill. This protects the Terrain's brakes longer and makes steep hills safer without compromising performance. Overall, acceleration is brisk and the driving experience is high seated, comfortable, and relaxed.
Interior
The 2017 GMC Terrain is comfortable and intuitive in the standard SL, featuring 12-volt auxiliary outlets and a six-speaker audio and infotainment system with a seven-inch color touchscreen. SiriusXM satellite radio is included on all but the SL trim. The top-level Denali has more advanced and inclusive technology, heated front seats, leather upholstery throughout, and eight-way power controls for the driver and front passenger seats, among other things.
Safety Features
The 2017 Terrain received a five-star side-crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA. At base, the GMC Terrain includes a suite of airbags, a rearview backup camera, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control with traction control. Drivers who emphasize active safety should seek out the SLE-2 or higher trim levels, as from there the preventative security is optional and becomes standard on the Denali. These active features range from forward collision warnings to rear park assist and rear cross traffic alerts.
