Mercedes-Benz offers the 2017 G-Class in three trims: G550, AMG G63, and AMG G65. The biggest difference between each trim is just how powerful the engine is, but each one also comes with a different list of features. The G550 has 19-inch wheels, but that goes up to 20 on the G63 and 21 on the G65. Every trim comes with Nappa leather, but the G63 uses designo Nappa leather and the 65 adds a diamond-pattern stitching to give the seats an extra bit of handcrafted quality.

Engine (Power)

The engine in the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 is nothing to sneeze at. It's a powerful biturbo 4.0-liter V8, and it generates up to 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. The AMG G63 uses a hand-assembled biturbo 5.5-liter V8, and it offers 563 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque. The last engine is the G65's biturbo 6.0-liter V12, and it leaves the others in the dust, thanks to its 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. If you need a lot of power and you don't have a lot of road, there's nothing better than the G-Class.

Performance

Beyond their potent engine power, the 2017 G-Class also comes with high-tech off-road features like three lockable differentials: front, center, and rear. The SUV also comes with permanent all-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case. Between that and the standard seven-speed transmission, drivers enjoy a very wide range of gear ratios. The AMG trims come with an electronic gear shifter that lets you easily switch between drive and reverse, and the AMG version of the transmission offers Comfort, Sport and Manual driving modes.

Interior

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Class has a much better interior than you would expect from a vehicle built to go off-road and stay there for hours at a time. Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control with a pollen filter, ambient lighting that matches the interior colors, and 10-way adjustable front seats with three memory settings. For entertainment, the G-Class also has a Harman Kardon audio system with 12 carefully placed speakers, the COMAND infotainment system with an 8-inch display and built-in navigation, and an available rear seat entertainment system that gives the back row a pair of displays and the inputs to let passengers play video games and watch DVDs independently.

Safety Features

The 2017 G-Class has more safety features than your average off-road SUV. Standard equipment includes Distronic, Mercedes-Benz's automatic cruise control system that can slow down with traffic and come to a complete halt if necessary. A blind spot assist is also standard equipment, and you can use the Parktronic sonar sensors to parallel park perfectly without bumping into a single obstacle. The G-Class also comes with Trailer Stability Assist, which can keep trailers that weigh up to 7,000 pounds under control.
