Trim Levels
The 2018 Ford Explorer comes in five trim levels, which are base, XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum. The base trim offers 18-inch wheels, black exterior accents, a rear spoiler, dual chrome exhaust tips, automatic headlights, LED low-beams and taillights, and heated, power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated blind spot mirrors. Stepping up to the XLT trim adds chrome exterior accents, LED signature lighting, and roof rails. In the middle of the pack is the Limited, which comes equipped with chrome rails, LED fog lights, auto-folding side mirrors with driver side memory settings, and a hands-free lift gate. Check out the Sport and you'll notice quad chrome exhaust tips, a glossy black front grille, and black roof rails. At the top of the options is the Platinum, which boasts satin chrome accents, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and automatic high beams.
Engine
The standard engine on the lower two trim levels of the 2018 Explorer is a 3.5-liter V-6 unit that puts out 255 pound-feet of torque and 290 horsepower. You can upgrade either of these models to include a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which makes 310 pound-feet of torque and 280 horsepower. The Limited trim comes standard with this engine, while the Sport and Platinum trims boast a more powerful 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6, pumping out 350 pound-feet of torque and 365 horsepower. All trim levels pair with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Performance
The base, XLT, and Limited trim levels are available with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive, while the Sport and Platinum only come with all-wheel drive. With the base V-6 engine, EPA fuel economy estimates come in at 16-17 mpg in the city and 22-24 mpg on the highway, producing combined estimates of 18-20 mpg, depending on whether you choose front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The 2.3-liter engine returns an estimated 16 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg combined.
Interior
Within the cabin of the base trim, features include cloth upholstery, Ford's Sync system with voice controls, four 12-volt power outlets, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and a six-speaker sound system with a USB port. Moving up to the XLT adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel, nicer cloth upholstery, and satellite radio. With the Limited trim, you'll get Ford's Sync Connect system with a Wi-Fi hotspot, leather-trimmed upholstery, heated outboard second-row seats, a 12-speaker Sony sound system, navigation. a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, and ambient interior lighting. Opt for the Sport to get unique perforated leather upholstery with red accent stitching and firmer suspension tuning. With the Platinum, standard features include a twin-panel moon roof and a nicer audio system.
Safety Features
All trim levels include the standard suite of safety features, including a rearview camera, while the XLT adds rear parking sensors. The Limited tacks on front parking sensors and the top trim level boasts adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic braking, blind spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, enhanced park assist, and lane departure warning with lane-keep assist.
