2018 Toyota C-HR

The C-HR is a new Toyota vehicle, a subcompact crossover SUV that slots in just below the popular RAV4. The 2018 model is the first of its kind, featuring a bold, modern design, a stylish and high-tech interior, and modern features like the Toyota Safety Sense P package.

Trims (Exterior)

For its debut year, the 2018 Toyota C-HR comes in two simple trims. The first trim is the XLE, which comes standard with 18-inch wheels with a unique Vortex design, a rear spoiler, a 7-inch touch-screen display, and Toyota Safety Sense P. The XLE Premium trim costs just a few thousand dollars more, and it adds the Smart Key System with a push-button start and doors that unlock when you touch them (assuming you have your key fob), fog lights, and extra driver assistance features.

Engine (Power)

The 2018 C-HR runs on an efficient 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 144 horsepower and 139 pound-feet of torque. The transmission is an intelligent CVT with shift mode, which means it uses artificial shift points to avoid the pitfalls that affected the first generation of continuously variable transmissions. Shift mode also lets you manually shift among seven of those artificial shift points. Thanks to the engine and transmission, the C-HR can manage 27 city mpg with 31 mpg on the highway.

Performance

The 2018 Toyota C-HR isn't as sporty as some of its class rivals, and it only offers a front-wheel drive system, but it still offers plenty of power for city driving and its small size makes it great for navigating crowded streets. This is in part thanks to the standard sport-tuned suspension that uses a large stabilizer bar and a double-wishbone suspension design to give drivers solid handling without sacrificing passenger comfort. The C-HR also comes with three drive modes: Normal, ECO, and Sport.

Interior

While the 2018 C-HR is a subcompact vehicle, its SUV design lets you pack in 19 cubic feet of cargo behind the back seats and up to 36.4 cubic feet once you fold the seats down. You can also count on a surprising number of features for a subcompact vehicle, including a standard dual-zone automatic climate control system with a pollen filter, an infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen, voice commands, six speakers, and a Bluetooth phone connection that allows hands-free phone calls and audio streaming. The XLE Premium also gives you an eight-way adjustable driver's seat with sport bolsters.

Safety

Thanks to Toyota's focus on safety, the 2018 C-HR comes with 10 standard air bags, the Star Safety System of six integrated safety features, and Toyota Safety Sense P. TSS-P includes driver assistance features like the lane departure alert with steering assist, the precollision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high beams. The XLE Premium model adds the blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, a system that warns you when someone else is coming up behind you either in your blind spot or as you're backing out into a street or parking lot.
