2018 Toyota Mirai
For decades, automakers have been working on green technologies with the goal of fewer emissions and more economy. Toyota has successfully achieved these goals with the 2018 Toyota Mirai, a hydrogen-powered car that uses absolutely no gasoline. What the Mirai lacks in emissions it makes up for in style, safety, and all the features you demand from a new vehicle. Here are just a few features that will make you take a second look at this hydrogen-powered vehicle.
Trim Levels
At first glance, the Mirai has a decidedly futuristic look, something you might have conjured as a child when imagining 21st-Century vehicles. LED headlights with automatic high beams illuminate the road, as do the wide-angle fog lamps. Moving along the sides of the car, you'll find heated, power-folding side mirrors and touch sensor door handles that lock and unlock with the touch of your hand. The Mirai meets the road on 17-inch engraved alloy wheels. Striking shades of red, blue, silver, black, or white paint adorn the Mirai's exterior, meaning the car will turn heads regardless of the color you select. These colors contrast nicely with the available Deep Ocean Blue or Warm White interiors.
Engine
If you're not aware how a hydrogen engine might work, here is a simple explanation: Instead of the traditional gasoline fuel cells, hydrogen is stored in carbon fiber-reinforced tanks. As the air flows through the front grille to the fuel cell stack, it meets the hydrogen also flowing into the fuel cell stack. After a chemical reaction, electricity is generated and sent to the motor with every push of the accelerator. The only emission produced by this process is water. The Mirai's electric motor produces 151 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. A full refuel of hydrogen takes about five minutes, and you can expect to cruise an EPA-estimated 312 miles between refuelings.
Performance
A front wheel drive vehicle, the Mirai deftly adapts to the road with an independent strut front suspension and double-wishbone rear suspension supported by front and rear stabilizer bars, hydraulic shocks, rear coil springs, and trailing arms.
Interior
Make the Mirai your personal oasis every time you climb inside. Front-seat passengers will enjoy the acoustic noise-reducing glass in the windshield and side windows. Find a comfortable spot behind the wheel with the heated power tilt/telescoping steering wheel and eight-way power heated seats with power lumbar support.
Safety Features
Like all new Toyota vehicles, the Mirai is fully equipped with a suite of safety technologies including stability control, brake assist, forward collision warning, and more. As a hydrogen-powered vehicle, however, the Mirai offers a unique set of safety concerns that Toyota intelligently addresses. If your Mirai is involved in an accident, the hydrogen fuel cells are designed to not leak. Sensors stop the flow of hydrogen if an impact is detected, and any hydrogen that does leak is quickly disbursed away from the cabin. Incidentally, no hydrogen-related parts exist within the cabin. Hydrogen, which is lighter than air, is quickly absorbed into the atmosphere in less time than it would take for it to ignite.
