Trim Levels (Exterior)
The GLS 450, GLS 580, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS 600 are the four trim levels available in the 2022 Mercedes Benz GLS. The GLS 450 rides on either 20-inch or 21-inch wheels. The GLS 580 starts at 21-inch alloy wheels, and you can upgrade to a considerable 23 inches by adding the night package, which also includes gloss black style features.
The AMG GLS 63 is equipped with one of seven different types of AMG lightweight wheels, several in the classic matte black and ranging from 21 inches to a class-leading 23 inches. The Maybach GLS 600 offers 22-inch high gloss back alloy wheels with a high-sheen finish, standard. For 2022, a new Cirrus Silver color option was added.
Engine (Power)
Both the GLS 450 turbo inline-6 with 362 horsepower and the GLS 580 turbo V-8 engine with 483 horsepower offer sophisticated technology and plenty of torque. The AMG GLS 63 is equipped with a twin-turbo V-8 engine which delivers 603 horsepower. The Maybach GLS 600 does not have quite the same amount of raw power. It offers the same twin-turbo V-8 engine, however, its 550 horsepower is calibrated for the ultimate refined performance.
Performance
The GLS, despite its size, is easy to maneuver on a twisty road. Air suspension is standard on all trims, but Mercedes also offers a new system called E-active body control, which uses a forward-facing camera to detect bumps and changes the suspension accordingly. Every 2022 GLS class drivetrain includes a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Interior
The 2022 GLS is significantly more modern, borrowing its dashboard and cockpit layout from the similarly new GLE Class SUV. It can accommodate up to seven passengers, but with the optional captain's chairs, it comfortably seats six. The first and second seat rows have plenty of legroom, and the third row, while not as large as the second, can comfortably seat adults. The GLS 450 and 580's standard upholstery is premium synthetic leather. For 2022, espresso brown-black leather upholstery is a new option.
The dashboard is dominated by two massive 12.3-inch digital panels. One is a driver-configurable gauge display, while the other is in charge of infotainment and runs Mercedes Benz MBUX software, which includes an iPhone-like virtual assistant. All GLS trims come with a Burmester surround sound stereo with 13 speakers, but if that's not enough, there's also a Burmester 3D audio system with a whopping 26 speakers. For 2022, all-season floor mats were also added as an option.
Safety Features
On this SUV, Mercedes Benz offers a variety of known driver-assistance options, more recent innovations like a semi-autonomous driving mode are optional. Some other key safety features worth picking up are automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. The semi-autonomous driving mode is an expansion to the adaptive cruise control.
