For the 2017 model year, the GMC Canyon comes in four trim levels: the base model, SLE, SLT, and Denali. Before you decide on a trim level, however, you first have to choose between a crew cab and extended cab, as well as either a 5- or 6-foot bed.

At the entry level, the GMC Canyon offers some top-notch appointments, including a chrome bumper, daytime running lamps, projector-beam headlights with LED signatures, a locking tailgate, and 16-inch, Ultra Silver, metallic cast aluminum wheels. A step up to the SLE provides even more, thanks to specs such as 17-inch, Blade Silver cast aluminum wheels; an EZ-Lift and Lower Tailgate; power exterior mirrors; and fog lamps. Meanwhile, the SLT boasts heated outside mirrors, a sliding rear window, and 18-inch, polished cast aluminum wheels.

If you're searching for a luxury pickup, opt for the Denali. Its sumptuous exterior includes a polished exhaust tip, a spray-on bedliner for maximum protection, and 20-inch, machined aluminum wheels.

Engine (Power)

With three engine options in 2017, the GMC has every driver covered. On the base model and SLE, the standard engine is an inline, 2.5-liter four-cylinder that churns out 200 horsepower and up to 191 pound-feet of torque. It's a fully capable engine, but if you plan on hauling heavy loads, upgrade to the next option.

The SLT and Denali trims come with a standard 3.6-liter V6 that's good for 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. However, all trims have the option for an available 2.8-liter, DuraMax Turbo-Diesel four-cylinder. Not only does this provide excellent fuel economy, but it's perfect for hauling cargo, thanks to its 181 horsepower and a whopping 369 pound-feet of torque.

Performance

If you're looking for a real workhorse, the GMC Canyon's smaller 2.5-liter engine hauls up to 3,500 pounds, yet it still gets an impressive 26 miles per gallon on the highway and 20 mpg in the city. With the 2.8-liter, the Canyon hauls 7,000 pounds while still achieving 28 mpg on the highway and 20 mpg in the city. To round out the group, the 3.6-liter also pulls 7,000 pounds, but it falls to 24 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg in the city.

Interior

The interior of the Canyon comes loaded with great interior amenities. Standard specs include a rear vision camera, a six-speaker audio system, USB ports, a 4.2-inch display, and teen driver control. Upper trims add navigation, leather seating, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bose premium sound, and a SiriusXM satellite radio.

Safety Features

For the 2017 model year, the GMC Canyon received a three-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some of the safety specs are forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.
