Trim Levels
The 2018 Pilot is available in five trims: the base LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and top-of-the-line Elite. This SUV has a sleek and taut front end that makes it look smaller than its actual size. Its distinctive grille with three horizontal chrome bars, angular headlights, sloping hood, and side vents give it a somewhat sporty appearance. Its side profile reveals its large size and spaciousness, but it's nonetheless athletic-looking with a strong shoulder line and bulging fenders. The LX, EX, and EX-L trims ride on 18-inch alloy wheels, while the Touring and Elite have 20-inch wheels.
Engine
Every Pilot trim is equipped with the same engine: a 3.5-liter V6 that delivers 280 horsepower. The lower trims are fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the Touring and Elite come with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Regardless of which transmission it uses, the SUV can go from zero to 60 mph in just seven seconds, which is impressive for a two-ton vehicle. With the nine-speed transmission, the Pilot has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and a combined fuel-economy rating of 22 mpg.
Performance
One of the highlights of the 2018 Pilot is its excellent ride quality. It delivers a softly-sprung ride, thanks to its exceptionally-compliant springs and dampers. It has dual-path shocks for better absorption of road bumps and a front strut, rear multi-link suspension setup for increased body control. Its strong brakes enhance its ability to negotiate corners and cramped situations. The Pilot also has impressive all-weather capability, thanks to its 7.3-inch ground clearance, traction-management system, and optional all-wheel drive. Its traction-management system comes with four different modes for managing wheel-slip: Normal, Mud, Sand, and Snow.
Interior
In its standard configuration, the 2018 Pilot seats eight people in three rows. It offers more legroom, headroom, and cargo space than most of its competitors. Besides being spacious, it also provides comfortable, supportive seats and soft-touch materials. The EX-L has leather seats, heated front seats, and a power moon-roof, while the Touring adds auto stop-start and ambient lighting. The Elite receives ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats. All trims feature an infotainment system with an 8-inch display, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The Touring and Elite come with a 10-speaker audio system.
Safety Features
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Honda Pilot a five-star rating. All trim levels come standard with a rearview camera. A right-side-view camera is also offered in all models except the Elite, which gets blind-spot monitors instead. There are also many optional safety features available, including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alert, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and lane-departure alert.
