2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE
The Mercedes-Benz GLE model is a midsize luxury SUV that sits right in the middle of the company's SUV range. Between the SUV's regular and AMG® models, buyers have plenty of options. While you can choose among several engines and mechanical setups, you can be sure Mercedes-Benz luxury is a part of every model.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2018 GLE has three basic models: the GLE 350, GLE 350 4MATIC®, and the (outdated) 2017 GLE 550e Plug-in Hybrid. The three AMG® models are the AMG® GLE 43, AMG® GLE 63, and AMG® GLE 63 S. What exactly comes with each model can change beyond the different engines and prices, but no matter what, you can count on solid features like a 10-way adjustable driver's seat with three memory settings, an 8-inch touch screen for the audio system, and Mercedes-Benz special ATTENTION ASSIST® system that watches how you drive and warns you when it's time to pull over.
Engine (Power)
The engines available to the 2018 Mercedes GLE start with a 3.5-liter V-6 that can deliver 302 horsepower. Both 350 models have the mark, but one has all-wheel drive while the other one doesn't. Skipping the older plug-in hybrid model, the first AMG® model runs on a 3.0-liter V-6 biturbo that squeezes out 385 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. That's enough to give the crossover a 0-60 score of 5.6 seconds. The GLE 63 trim runs on a 5.5-liter biturbo V-8 engine handcrafted by an expert engineer, and from this engine you can expect 550 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The AMG® GLE 63 S offers even more from the same engine block, getting 577 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque.
Performance
The best performance possible from a 2018 GLE is obviously going to come from the AMG® models. AMG® models come with things like a performance-tuned all-wheel drive that distributes engine torque in a 60/40 split instead of sticking with one pair in most conditions. AMG® models also come with an enhanced nine-speed transmission, and you can take advantage of its SUV design to use a terrain type selector called AMG® DYNAMIC SELECT.
Interior
You can count on a Mercedes-Benz to come with a high-quality interior, and the 2018 GLE is no exception. As a midsize crossover, the GLE has room to spare in the back for cargo: 38.2 cubic feet behind the seats and up to an impressive 80.3 cubic feet with the back folded. Then there are features like Nappa leather sport seats, HD Radio and online streaming, and an available rear seat entertainment system for long drives.
Safety Features
Luxury manufacturers are always on the front when it comes to new safety features and designs, and the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE is no exception. Models come with features like crosswind assist that keeps you from moving sideways on the open plains, nine air bags spread throughout the cabin, and adaptive braking. You can also get an available feature like MAGIC VISION CONTROL, a windshield wiper that sprays fluid right in front of the wiper.
