2018 Sprinter Vans
Using a Mercedes-Benz van for commercial purposes may seem like a reckless extravagance, but it's actually a practical move considering its exceptional reliability, utility, and performance. The German automaker's full-size van offering comes in the form of the Sprinter, a versatile van with numerous customization possibilities that are designed to suit a wide range of purposes. Here's a look at the latest Sprinter.
Trim Levels
The 2018 Sprinter is offered in two models: the base 2500 and the 3500. The van comes in three different configurations: Cargo, Crew, and Passenger. In addition, there are four body lengths, three wheelbases, three heights, and three payload capacities for you to choose from. An electric version called the eSprinter is expected to be released soon. The new Sprinter retains the tall, boxy, and elongated shape of its predecessor, but it has undergone several noticeable styling changes. Its front end now looks sharper with a new grille, angular headlights, and revised bumpers. A slightly bulging hood adds a touch of muscularity that implies its excellent work capabilities.
Engine
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter offers two engine options. The standard engine is a 2.1-liter four-cylinder that generates an impressive 265 lb-ft of torque. If you need to do heavy hauling or highway driving, it's recommended that you opt for the 188-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 diesel engine that delivers 325 lb-ft of torque. Both engines team with a seven-speed automatic transmission and RWD, but AWD is also available. The AWD option is meant for use in areas with severe weather or poor road conditions. The Sprinter has a maximum hauling capacity of 5,496 pounds.
Performance
Despite its size and practicality, the Sprinter is surprisingly agile and fun to drive. It's relatively easy to maneuver in tight quarters and parking lots, thanks to a modern chassis design that provides a less truck-like feel. It also demonstrates impressive body control around corners and over uneven surfaces. It's a good idea to get the optional AWD if you have to negotiate rough terrain frequently. An AWD model is 4.3 inches higher in front and 3.1 inches higher in the rear, providing increased ground clearance for a 20-percent greater slope-climbing ability. There's also a low-range gear available for enhanced tenacity on rough terrain.
Interior
Seating capacity varies depending on the configuration you choose. The Cargo van has only two front seats, while the Crew adds a second-row bench. The Passenger offers four rows of seats to accommodate up to 12 passengers. The largest configuration has a maximum cargo capacity of 547 cubic feet. The Sprinter's cabin is well-organized and flexible. It comes with four dashboard options, supportive and comfortable seats, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, two-speaker audio system, and a wood cargo floor. As for tech features, it has a 5.8-inch display, SD media input, USB port, and Bluetooth connectivity.
Safety Features
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter comes standard with a rearview camera and Parktronic parking assistance. There are also many optional safety features available, including forward-collision detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, attention assistance, and crosswind assistance.
