Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2022 BMW 5 Series comes in four main trim levels, which are 530i, 530e, 540i, and M550i. It's also offered in the performance-focused M5 trim, although this is typically viewed as a separate model. Exterior features on the 530i and 530e trims include 18-inch wheels, heated and power-folding side mirrors, chrome accents, adaptive LED headlights, and matte paint.
Moving up to the 540i brings larger 19-inch V-spoke wheels, as well as multiple package options. Some of the features offered in packages include a power trunk lid, sporty trim, a sport-tuned suspension, and upgraded 19- or 20-inch wheels. Many of these features come standard on the M550i, along with a rear spoiler, an adaptive sport suspension, and an electronically controlled rear differential.
Engine (Power)
Each of the four models of the 2022 5 Series has its own unique powertrain. With the base model, you get a 2.0-liter TwinPower turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 248 horsepower. The 530e is an eco-conscious option, boasting a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, putting out a combined total of 288 horsepower. It also has a 12-kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery. Both powertrains work with an eight-speed automatic transmission with two shift modes and paddle shifters on the steering wheel.
Next up is the 540i, which has a 3.0-liter TwinPower turbo V-6 engine that produces 335 horsepower. This engine works with the same eight-speed automatic transmission. The most powerful of the bunch is the M550i, which boasts a 4.4-liter turbocharged V-8 rated at 523 horsepower.
Performance
The eight-speed transmission that is standard across the board delivers quick and intuitive shifting for a more enjoyable ride. Both the upper two trim levels feature powerful and capable engines, while the plug-in hybrid model is great for drivers who want to save at the pump. The M550i has a number of sporty driving upgrades, while the optional Dynamic Handling package tacks on active roll stabilization, a high-performance adaptive suspension, and active steering.
Interior
Climb into the cabin of the base trim to find perforated faux leather upholstery, wood accents, a power steering wheel, and a moon roof, multi-zone automatic climate control, and a universal garage door opener. Tech equipment includes a 12.3-inch touch screen, integrated navigation, dual USB ports, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration.
As you move through the higher trims, a range of comfort and tech upgrades are available. Some of these options include heated and ventilated front seats, an upgraded steering wheel, and leather upholstery. On the tech side, you can also get a premium sound system and a head-up display.
Safety Features
All 2022 BMW 5 Series trims come with forward collision mitigation, a rearview camera, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The 540i is available with a Parking Assistance package, which bundles automated parking, parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera. Another option is the Driving Assistance Plus package, which has front cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and side avoidance.
