For Audi, “Advancement Through Technology” is more than a catch-phrase; it’s a road-map for every car they design. The brand new Audi SQ7 with an electric turbocharger is a shining example of what‘s possible when a company focuses on improving the core essentials.

Earlier this week, Audi showcased their new SQ7 at the Geneva Auto Show, and everyone is talking about their electric turbocharger. The SQ7 actually has three turbochargers – two traditional and one electric – but the electric is the first of its kind.

It’s used help the traditional turbos spool up, and reduce what is called “turbo lag”. “Turbo lag” refers to the time it takes for a turbo to spool up and aide acceleration. When the SQ7’s conventional turbos are supplemented by the electrical turbocharger, it reduces this turbo lag and allows for better acceleration.

The SQ7 also features a 4.0L V8 diesel. In all, this triple-turbocharged engine produces 429 horsepower and 664lb. ft. of torque at 32mpg. It can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds, and we’re guessing it could easily pull a sizable load with all that torque.

Of course, the SQ7 will also be equipped with the legendary AWD quattro system. But on top of that, it will even offer a performance package with a slip differential, all-wheel steering, and Audi’s new active roll stabilization. Active roll stabilization counters the top-heavy sway that plagues most SUVs, giving the SQ7 “taught, sporty handling.”

It won’t come cheap, though. The Audi SQ7 is priced at approximately $100,000. You can buy a lot of car for $100,000, but considering this one has great handling, acceleration, gas mileage, and plenty of towing capability, it’s understandable. Not many vehicles can offer so much in one package.

The Audi SQ7 will go on sale this spring in Europe, but it’s unclear whether they will be selling the SUV in the United States. Audi has acknowledged that the SUV would do well here, though.
