New Car For New Bond Film Shows Pulse of Auto World

Editor’s Note: We are not super into James Bond movies. We enjoy one or two on occasion, but we’re not walking Wikipedias full with every single detail ever. He likes his martinis stirred, not shaken, right? Whoa, hey, calm down there; it was just a joke.

The vehicles of James Bond films are part of American culture. From the iconic Aston Martin DB5 of “Goldfinger” to surprises we barely remember like the Toyota 2000 GT in “You Only Live Twice,” the vehicles we consider “cool” have been shaped over the years by 007.

For this reason, the recent announcement of the next James Bond film, “SPECTRE,” came with a dimension that interests us as a car organization: the official car for her majesty’s special agent will be a specially-designed Aston Martin DB10.

We say specially designed because this DB10 is a collaboration between film director Sam Mendes (“American Beauty,” “Away We Go”) and the automaker. This collaboration tells us something important: to Mendes, Bond’s car will be more than a pair of wheels. For a director to personally involve himself in such a minor element, we can expect to see the DB10 have more than a minor role.

This was all but confirmed by a comment from Mendes himself: “I would say that [the new car] it doesn’t behave in the way perhaps that even Bond thinks it might.”

Reports that Aston Martin will be producing 10 copies of the vehicle for the filming crew (“Quantum of Solace,” for example, only requested seven), suggest that Mendes will either be going full-Oprah and handing out DB10’s as personal favors, or that the film is going to feature a lot of car scenes.

Whatever the reason, we are glad to see that James Bond’s next chapter will give us all some inspiration in our morning commutes about how to drive like a spy.
