New Toyota Supra Spied Pulling Out of BMW Testing Center

If the phrase “New Toyota Supra” caught your attention, here are a few things you need to know: First of all, Toyota is developing a new Supra (in case you couldn’t tell). Second, Toyota is building the Supra in conjunction with BMW – creators of the ultimate driving machine.

Third, and most importantly, the new Supra is based on the same platform as the Toyota GT 86, the Subaru BRZ, and the Scion FR-S: three rear-wheel drive, front engine coupes known for their sports car agility and entry-level affordability. That’s great news for anybody who loves classic Toyota Supras. That is, as long as the new one lives up to its predecessors.

We’re thinking it will

It’s been more than 10 years since Toyota released a Supra, and technology has since come a long way. The new Toyota Supra will be faster than ever (even if it’s heavier), more fuel efficient, and more exciting to drive. We’re predicting two trim levels: one with at least 250 horsepower and a 0-60 time around 5 seconds, and a sportier model with upwards of 300 horsepower and extras like launch control and torque vectoring.

The Toyota Supra will enter the market above cars like the Mazda MX-5, and compete with vehicles like the Nissan 370z and the Ford Focus RS. It’s going to have some stiff competition, though. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that Toyota and BMW come up with something great.

First look

At first glance the Toyota Supra is looking pretty good. The engine sounds a little odd, and there’s speculation that what we’re hearing is an electric motor combined with a rowdy 4-cylinder. If that’s the case, you can expect the best of both worlds, with lots of power off the line and at the top-end.

Other rumors have speculated the new Toyota Supra will come with a BMW-developed straight-six engine. We don’t feel like this is likely, but we’ll see. As far as the transmission goes, we’ve heard about a dual-clutch automatic, but there’s no confirmation on a manual model. We’ll keep you posted on this.
