If there’s anything we can understand, it’s a love of cars. We know more about random cars we see around town then most people know about their own cars. But when it comes to spending money on a car, our budget lands pretty close to the median. And that’s on a payment plan. 

So, you’ll probably understand why our jaws dropped to the floor when we heard some maniac spent $21.78 million American dollars on an aluminum sports car that was built half a century ago (the maniac in question did not disclose his or her name to the public). That car, is the 1955 Jaguar D-Type.

Totally worth it

It’s a special D-Type, though. It is the D-Type that took home first place in the 1956 Le Mans 24-hour race. It’s a sports car that made history! Jaguar F-Types learned everything they know about racing from this D-Type; Ferrari F40s pin up posters of this D-Type for motivation! Owning it would be like owning the boxing gloves Muhammad Ali used to knock out George Foreman in 1974.

But at the end of the day it’s just a metal car with four wheels, and those are just a pair of sweaty boxing gloves, right?

Nope. Wrong. They’re much more than just a sweaty pair of gloves, or a soda can with four wheels. They’re artifacts of historic moments in history – instruments played by the finest artisans of their time – pieces of history we have to protect!

Still, they’re just objects

You don’t need them to survive. They used to serve a purpose, but now they’re kind of obsolete. That 1955 Jaguar D-Type couldn’t beat a 2016 Ford Focus RS around the Nurburgring, and those boxing gloves wouldn’t even meet today’s regulations. If both objects spontaneously combusted into smithereens right now, the world would be no worse off.

Shut up rational thinking. This is no place for your trickery. $21.78 million dollars is a perfectly reasonable amount of money to spend on a car…

Right?…

We don’t know. Life’s short. Could that $22 million dollars have gone to better use? Absolutely. Do we always make rational and reasonable choices with our money? No. That never changes – no matter how deep your pockets get. To us, $22 million on a car is bonkers, but who knows what that car might mean to the person who bought it.
